School-based Mental Health Psychology Externship Training Program 

Program Overview:

InSite Solutions, provides on-site mental healthcare services for children and adolescents attending a variety of public and charter schools within Washington, DC. We are a school-based mental health consulting company committed to delivering comprehensive evaluation and treatment services to students in integrated settings so as to reduce burden and access-to-care issues for student and their families.

The externship at InSite Solutions places advanced doctoral externs (i.e., 4th or 5th year doctoral candidates in Clinical Psychology) within a public or charter school within Washington, DC. for an enriching training experience. As supervised by an attending psychologist via InSite Solutions, advanced doctoral externs will provide school-based services including:

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Individualized, short-term, empirically supported treatments (e.g., Trauma-Focused CBT, Coping Cat Child Anxiety Treatment, Adolescent Depression Interventions, Grief/Loss Counseling, etc.).

Assessment: Externs will be trained to provide detailed reports of students as well as sensitive, evidence-based feedback to families/educators regarding the child’s development and proposed treatment plan/school-based intervention recommendations. This may also include conducting comprehensive DSM-V psychodiagnostic assessments to help determine eligibility criteria and IEP designation status. 

Doctoral externs also will receive opportunities to:

Interface with a multidisciplinary team of school-based mental health providers (e.g., school based social workers, psychologist, psychiatrist, etc.)

Aid in disseminating evidence-based programs to school personnel at multiple levels (e.g., general education classroom behavior management programs)

Consult on individual student behavior management plans

Lead support groups for parents of schoolchild children on a variety of topics (e.g., parent behavioral support training, sleep and nutrition, medication adherence, child development).

Supervision:

Individual in-person weekly supervision as well as informal supervision and didactic training will be provided by licensed clinical psychologists on site at the school site. Externs may also have the opportunity to take part in weekly interdisciplinary group supervision with other externs, school-based social workers, school-based psychologists and school-based psychiatrist. The extern may also have the opportunity to take part in and lead IEP meetings. 

Qualifications:

2-3 years of training in evidence-based assessment and intervention, as well as prior practicum experience in child/adolescent therapy is required. Preference will be given to advanced doctoral students (4th year or beyond) and those with backgrounds in cognitive-behavioral interventions with children and adolescents.

Time Requirement:
One to two days per week (9am to 5pm)

Number of Positions Being Offered:
Three to four externs will be recruited to begin in August
